Resolve the state before entering a name

Sumter County alone is not enough to select a criminal-record system. The verified examples here are Florida and South Carolina; they are not an exhaustive list of places with this county name. Use the state and court printed on the summons, arrest paperwork or case notice. A search in the wrong Sumter County can produce a plausible namesake or an uninformative no-match.

Next decide whether you need a court outcome, a police incident report, present jail custody or a statewide criminal history. Those products have different custodians. Keep the court case number separate from a police incident or detention number, and retain any cross-reference supplied by the clerk. A jail listing does not establish the later outcome of the criminal charge.

For Florida, choose Court Records rather than Official Records

The Sumter County, Florida Clerk maintains criminal and other court cases filed in that county. On its Records Search page, choose the court-record option; the separate Official Records collection is not a substitute for the criminal case file. Use the available name or case-number search and record the court division, filing date and case number before requesting a document.

Public access is limited by confidentiality rules. The clerk distinguishes public access from party and attorney/registered-user access; a public index entry does not authorize opening restricted material. If a document is not displayed, ask whether it is publicly releasable, available offline, or requires a properly authorized access category. The main office is at 215 E. McCollum Avenue, Bushnell, FL 33513; telephone 352-569-6600.

Budget for a Florida court copy or clerk search

The Florida clerk’s miscellaneous schedule lists $1 for a photographic public-record copy no larger than 8½ by 14 inches, $2 for certification of public-record copies and $2 per year searched. Ask the clerk to apply the correct page, document and search units to your request and quote any delivery charge. Do not confuse a per-year staff search charge with the cost of browsing an online result.

Specify the defendant, case number, charge or count, document title, date range and whether a certified disposition is required. Request a delivery estimate and the accepted payment route before sending funds. A court-summary printout can help locate the file, but formal proof should be the requested judgment or disposition with the required certification. No universal turnaround for every Sumter Florida copy request is established by the pages reviewed.

For South Carolina, follow the General Sessions case

The Sumter County, South Carolina Clerk links the Third Judicial Circuit’s online court docket. Its General Sessions records include sentence sheets, arrest warrants, indictments and pleadings; the clerk says this does not include a hearing transcript. Use the Circuit Court search to identify the case and ask for the sentence sheet when the sentence is the question. Traffic tickets are handled by Summary Court, so preserve the actual court name.

The Judicial Center clerk is on the third floor at 215 N. Harvin Street, Sumter, SC 29150. General Sessions contacts are 803-436-2264 or 803-436-2265. The clerk publishes a $10 charge for certified copies of sentence sheets and similar documents. Confirm the specific document, mailing/payment instructions and delivery time with that office; do not transfer this South Carolina fee to a Florida case.

Use FDLE for a Florida statewide history

For a broader Florida history rather than one county file, FDLE offers an Instant Search at $24 plus a $1 card-processing fee. Results can be printed or emailed immediately and are not certified. Its staff-run Certified/Non-Certified Search is $24: published processing is five business days for non-certified results and six to seven for certified results, followed by ordinary mail delivery. These searches do not replace a county court’s certified judgment.

Use SLED CATCH for a South Carolina history

SLED CATCH searches South Carolina criminal history by name and date of birth. It does not provide a nationwide history or wanted-person information, and a match can still be a namesake. The ordinary report costs a nonrefundable $25. A dated notice effective July 1, 2026 adds a $1.43 online service fee, although older terms on the same page still say $1; use the current dated notice and verify the final amount before paying.

For mailed SLED results, use its Criminal Records Check Form, proper payment and a self-addressed stamped envelope to SLED Records Department, P.O. Box 21398, Columbia, SC 29221-1398. State explicitly if certification or notarization is required. The mail route has no convenience fee and does not accept cash or personal checks. It is a state-history request, not an order for the Sumter General Sessions sentence sheet.

Read the outcome for the correct person and count

Compare the full case caption, state, court and dates with your existing information. Separate an arrest, an indictment and a sentence: they describe different stages. If several charges appear, obtain the disposition for the relevant count and check for later amended orders. A pending charge is not proof of conviction, and a missing public record is not proof that a restricted, older or differently indexed case never existed.

For a police report or current custody question, identify the agency that investigated or the facility holding the person. Do not expect the clerk’s criminal docket to supply investigative narratives or real-time custody information. Conversely, use the court record when a detention entry leaves the disposition unresolved.

Take a mismatch back to the originating record owner

If a court entry appears wrong, keep the case reference and ask the clerk to check the underlying filing and any later order. A commercial report should also be disputed with its reporting company; correcting the court source and correcting the republished report are separate tasks. For questions about SLED results, the Public Dissemination Unit lists 803-896-1443, weekdays 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m., and [email protected].
